Benefits of Membership

Each year the national, state and local governments attempt to regulate the workings of private business through regulations and taxation. In today’s politics, numbers and money are the controlling factors in making and defeating laws. Individual business people can get lost in the shuffle, but well-organized groups can exert some pressure, which is vital to success.

State Issues

The Texas Warehouse Association has formed a political action committee named WAREPAC. Through the group action of the PAC, we seek to gain the recognition necessary to get important information about the warehouse industry in Texas to elected officials. When the legislature in 1987 tried to remove the industry sales tax exemption, WAREPAC played a role in educating the legislature about the need for the exemption. Again in 1997 when an effort was made to require warehouses to assess and collect the state sales tax on warehouse services, helped to defeat the bill in the State Senate. Certainly further efforts will be made in subsequent legislatures to enact laws that will threaten the strength of the warehouse industry and the economy of the state. As members of the warehouse industry, we must have the strength to again prevail.

We are certain that a substantial part of our business will move across state lines if we must increase our rates by as much as 6.25% to 8.25%. Your membership in this association will greatly improve the industry’s standing in the state.

National Issues

We are also very active in the U.S. Congress where serious issues of ergonomics, estate taxes, labor law and environmental issues are actively being debated. All of these issues seriously impact the ability of the warehouse industry to provide competitive services to the industrial, commercial and manufacturing companies in our economy.

Educational Seminars

In addition to a legislative role, the Texas Warehouse Association also provides educational seminars on such subjects as human relations, hazardous materials storage and handling, insurance and operational problems.
